Elvis - The Fool Album

Postby Suspicious Minds » Sun Dec 23, 2018 11:58 am

Hi Phoenix!

This week’s poll will focus on
Elvis - The Fool Album (1973)

D5345648-6D10-4BBA-B49D-B67BFEC8819F.jpeg

You may select up to 6 options. Apart from the original Fool Album, tracks 1-10, there are 3 bonus songs: (1) ‘Steamroller Blues’, which was released as flipside of ‘Fool’, (2) ‘For The Good Times’ (studio master) and (3) ‘My Way’ (studio master). Live versions of the latter two debuted on Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden (1972) and Aloha From Hawaii (1973) respectively.

As a reminder: you can sample the songs below

Due to digital inconveniences, i.e. no complete Fool Album on YouTube, I’ve added the songs separately. Apologies for the lengthy OP, hence scrolling burdens, and for varying sound quality of the clips. Enjoy the poll. Feedback and comments are always appreciated!

’Fool’ / ‘Steamroller Blues’ RCA Single

From Graceland Auctions:

In order to differentiate this 1973 release from the iconic second LP release from 1956 also entitled Elvis, this 1973 album is often causally referred to as ‘The Fool album’ based on the first track’s title. [There was] an incredible mock-up preliminary album cover in which the title track appears prominently on the front and back under Elvis’ name. For obvious reasons, RCA scrapped this version while retaining most of the other design elements for the final version.

I have voted for the three piano songs.

"Elvis Now" and "Love Letters From Elvis" are often tagged as being leftovers albums, and I agree with that. But "Elvis" was an even more blatant and inept example of that category of albums.

At release time, July 1973, seven of the songs were over two years old, and the other three were over one year old. Nothing from 1973.

That was truly a(nother) slap in the face of the fans and the general record buying public, especially after the commercial success that was the "Aloha" project and album release.

The three piano songs are beautiful examples of Elvis on its own, doing what he did best - sing.

The rest of the tracks form a sad hodge-podge, with "It's Impossible" leading the crapdom competition. Just reading the list of performers who recorded this song before (or after) Elvis tells the whole story.

As for the Dylan cover, it's a bored and boring attempt at a song that was a masterpiece in its original version. To listen to Elvis repeat the same verses over and over and over is an exercise in masochism, really. If it wasn't enough, an even longer version was discovered not long ago.

Finally, we know Elvis loved the song "Padre" as recorded by Toni Arden in 1958 (see September 1958 interviews), but his version is an over-the-top mess.

Can anyone tell me which albums the studio My Way previously has appeared on?

I can only select 5, and that was a stretch. I have to disagree with Mister Moon to a degree. I think It's Still Here and I Will Be True are OK but nothing special. They are very self indulgent in a way, which is OK, but it's the kind of thing you do in the privacy of your own home, not in a commercial setting. I love Kathleen though, it is beautiful. It's Impossible Is fabulous, very well performed and my favourite of all the versions I have heard. Mister Moon will no doubt strike me off his Christmas Card list now.

I don't think "Don't Think Twice" can be genuinely included as it's just a bit of fun and a warm up. This wasn't a serious attempt to record the song.

As for Padre, it really is a mess and was in completely the wrong key, but how Elvis didn't see that I really don't know. Maybe to his ears it was a great rendition (was he stoned?) but if ever there was a case for a good producer, this was it.

I believe the original release was the 70s box set, in 1995.

I respectfully disagree. That award belongs to ‘Padre’, imo.

What a boring album, I can only select 'Steamroller' and that wasn't even on the originally released album!

Whilst I voted for my favourites in the poll, I like the album as a whole - and the bonus tracks.

Of all the tracks it's only 'Kathleen' that I'm not overly keen on.

The other piano songs are absolute gold though.

Although, I liked many of the tracks before even listening to the actual album anyway. Some of this album's songs were among the highlights of the silver box, for example.

Certainly not the best Album, but I voted for "Fool" and "Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right". The first one because I really like the song, and the latter because it makes me think Elvis really enjoyed singing it, even if it is just repeating the same lines over and over.

I don't like "I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen" either, and I forgot to select "(That's What You Get) For Lovin' Me". I'm quite fond of the Peter, Paul & Mary version of that song, and I think Elvis was too.

The discussions between Joan Deary and Felton Jarvis did not result in a superior album.. I didn't check the release/recording dates but even though it might not have been a commercial success, but somehow I feel like this might have been the moment to release the "I'm Leavin'" album that was released for Record Store Day a fews years ago. It would have been a better album...

I remember the mid-nineties when I bought the CD-version and listened to this album for the first time. I was slightly disappointed.

I've enabled the option to re-vote. So, in case you forgot to select a song, or made a mistake, you can re-vote.

Generally, I endorse the idea: make your pick and stick to your guns. But I enabled the re-vote option a few polls ago as requested by a member who pointed me to the fact that if you made a mistake or so, you couldn't change it anymore.

So, go ahead, Nicod98, if you wish to re-vote. If not, that's okay too.
