Strictly Elvis No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 (1968)

Postby Bob » Sun Apr 05, 2015 1:27 am

The best Elvis Fan Club magazine published during Elvis´ lifetime was without a doubt Rocky Barra´s STRICTLY ELVIS.
He started the club (and the magazine) in 1968, just before Elvis reclaimed his throne. Sadly enough I do not own the first three issues myself, but I have scanned the numbers 4 and 5, with more issues coming up soon (I hope).

Very interesting. The visit to Nashville, 16 shows for the '68 special, a letter from Gerry Riff and Elvis has re-recorded Baby Let's Play House. And that's just SE No 4. Great stuff.

Issue no 5 mentions that the re-recorded Baby Let's Play House is being played by DJs in the states.

Ain´t that weird? There are sometimes mistakes in these kind of mags, but for Rocky to mention this apparent new version twice in a row in two different mags?

I remember the rumours at the time. Didn't it turn out to be someone like Sleepy La Beef?

Oh, really? I have no idea to be honest. And when that magazine was published and the rumour apparently started, I was only 1 year old (and listening 24/7 to Your Time Hasn´t Come Yet, Baby).

Funny thing is that Baby, let's play house was recorded by Vince Taylor in 1961, The Beatles in 1965 and Mungo Jerry in 1970.
So what recording (sounding like Elvis re-recorded it?) was played by the DJ's in 1968?
Pre 1968 recordings are by Arthur Gunter (1954), Buddy Holly* (1955), VInce Everett (1955) and Johnny Burnette Trio** (1956).
Sometimes the title was changed to *I wanna play house with you or **Oh baby babe
Sleepy LaBeef recorded it in 1978 and Charlie Feathers in 1979.

Sleepy LaBeef recorded it in 1978

Sleepy recorded it in 1956 first time round and it's very Elvis like. It could be that this one was set for release and had been sent out to DJs.

Bob, I may have numbers 1, 2 and 3 available. Give me a couple of days and I'll have a look for you. If they're here, I'll send you scans of all the pages.

Bob, I haven't had the chance to look yet - but it's on my list of things to do tomorrow night. All the best.

It wasn't.
The Beatles just borrowed a line from the song for this one
