We Can Make The Morning - by Expression

Postby DarylR » Thu Mar 26, 2020 2:14 am

Hi guys and gals,

Several years ago, I was in contact with a guy named Bob Kelly, who was a member of a group called Expression, along with Jay Ramsey, the guy who wrote "We Can Make The Morning." I eventually got in contact with Jay and he told me that Elvis got his song through a mutual friend of Lamar Fike's who played it for Fike. I ended up getting a CD-R of a live show from Bob Kelly that featured a version of "We Can Make The Morning" by Expression that was done in Bakersfield, California. Bob is the guy emceeing at the beginning of the recording. Obviously, the performance post-dates Elvis' recording as Bob mentions that the song was featured on Elvis' "Elvis Now" album at the beginning. The recording does date from 1972 as far as I know. Hope you enjoy it. I should also point out that the Roy Clark song that was written by Jay Ramsey that Clark had performed recently on the television program, "Hee-Haw" was titled "Lord, Let It Rain" off of Clark's 1972 album, "Roy Clark Country!" This episode of "Hee Haw" originally aired on November 18, 1972, according to this website https://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/hee-haw ... 23/201935/

Here's a link to Jay Ramsey's wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Ramsey

Here's some homemade artwork that Bob Kelly created that came with the CD-R.

And of course, here is Elvis' version of "We Can Make The Morning."

Thanks for the info.

Not a song i particularly care for.

Elvis' performance of the song is not outstanding.
she's well acquainted with a touch of the velvet hand, like a lizard on a window pane

Their version is quite good. Elvis' is a bit messy.

Cheers DarylR. It's not an outstanding song and Elvis' performance was poor. I don't know why he did it.

'We Can Make The Morning' is at No.405 on the Spotify list of streamed Elvis songs [out of 698].

He gives a plodding rendition of a mediocre song.

405 is surely unjustified. What comes below it?

Yours is a great description

People will mostly stream songs that they already know, so the listing is not necessarily an indication of a song's (and performance's) merit. There are several on that listing that I would rate pretty highly - but people just may not know them.

You're right !

The streaming listing only shows a song's popularity among the Spotify streamers !

Let's hope they are tempted to try some of the lesser-known gems sometimes !

That's interesting.

In 1958, Gene Vincent recorded two Bob Kelly songs for Capitol - "Git It" and "Somebody Help Me".

I added Jay Ramsey's wikipedia page to my original post. In the wikipedia page, it mentions that Bob Kelly was a well known Dallas, Texas disk jockey.

I have a soft spot for this song.
Its not that it is a great recording by elvis but more for sentimental reasons.
I remember buying the NOW album as a young teen around 1982 and played the whole album over and over again.....even Hey jude was a great track back then :)
