My understanding was that he sang 'live' in the white suit, to a pre-recorded backing track.

The backing track meant that all the vocals were very similar...

Hmmmm.... Interesting. I thought he sang live but that they didn't use the vocal but instead used it as a lip synch. Ill have to give them another listen.

Doesn't he get the 'while I can walk' & the 'while I can talk' lines transposed on one take ?

Hmmmm too. I've just watched the DVD, both stand ups and the white suit bit. He fluffs both stand ups if you watch him carefully (on the last verse) so actually we don't hear what he sang.

The white suit lyric is very slightly different.
S/U Strong winds of promise that will blow away the doubt and fear
W/S Strong winds of promise that will blow away all the doubt and fear

S/U Still I am sure that the answer’s, answer’s gonna come somehow
W/S Still I am sure that the answer, answer’s gonna come somehow
S/U Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, yeah
W/S Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, oh yeah

I'm surprised it was that way round, not the other.
Okay, cool, so we know they are different versions but I'm surprised to see that they were that way around.
The differences seem to my memory to be single / studio version = W/S version but that cant be right if the S/U performances are the lip synched ones.

I think the soundtrack LP version is the single version (plus applause and lip synched to on 29th) which is not the same as the W/S version. Single recorded 23rd. W/S overdub on the 30th.

Whatever he actually sang on the 29th has not been heard. Watch that last verse on both stand ups and he cocks it up.
