Songwriter Mark James - Secrets of Elvis' 'Suspicious Minds'

Postby OnStage55 » Tue Sep 10, 2019 5:29 pm

Nice to hear Mark James personal thoughts about the song and Elvis.
This is not really secrets to hardcore Elvis fans, Mark has told the story before but this is new and very good.

One of Elvis' biggest hits was the powerful "Suspicious Minds," which was released 50 years ago this year, in 1969.
In this video, hear from "Suspicious Minds" songwriter Mark James about how the song came about, how it found its way to Elvis and much more!

Very interesting, OnStage55. Thank you !

James is misplacing the events, because "Suspicious Minds" was recorded in January, and "Any Day Now" in February.

Can't blame him for that. Sometimes I can't even remember details of things I did a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the topic.

All I can say is, it's a great song - well constructed, great melody, great words and an all round first class pop song.

Probably Elvis' most well known song.

Without 'Suspicious Minds', Elvis's star would be dimmer - maybe only by a tiny fraction, but it would be dimmer.

Hmmmm...no. Had the song never had been recorded by Elvis his star status was already there with the previous 16 number ones before it.

I said "a tiny fraction". The number of non Elvis fans who have said to me that Suspicious Minds is a great record is considerable. It is emblematic of Elvis, post the 68 Comeback.

Therefore I stand by my statement ;)
