I never did get into the Who. I saw Pete Townsend in Chertsey years ago and was going to chat because his birthday is the same day as mine (not same year), but I thought that was a lame reason to stop him. I also did a bit of business with his studio in Chertsey or Twickenham, can't remember now, but he wasn't there. I've had a drink or two in the Railway Hotel in Harrow where they used to play way back.

I understand; it’s not your generation. ;-)
Still, a drink with Pete could have been cool.

I’m ‘selectively’ into The Who. I don’t have all their records and their rock opera isn’t my thing. This is prob my fav Who album: Who’s Next - with a fabulous (imo) ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’.

The Clash - "The Clash" (CBS, 1977)

Clash debut front.jpg

Recorded and released in Elvis time, early 1977, this was The Clash's debut album.

It's such a classic record, full of anthemic songs, like "London's Burning", "White Riot", "Garageland", "Career Opportunities" and "I'm So Bored With The USA".

The album's front cover photo, shot by Kate Simon, was taken in the alleyway directly opposite the front door of the band's 'Rehearsal Rehearsals' building in Camden Market. Drummer Terry Chimes, though a full member of the Clash at the time, did not appear in the picture as he had already decided to leave the group.

Here's the same spot in 2008 - note the writing, "Do not sit on stairs". Strummer would have had a laugh.

Ramones - "Leave Home" (Sire, 1977)

Leave Home.jpg

Recorded late 1976 and released early 1977, in Elvis time, this was The Ramones' second album.

The band's first three albums ("Ramones", "Leave Home" and "Rocket To Russia"), released within 18 months in 1976 and 1977, are a magnificent punk trilogy. It's been explained by band members that most of the songs included in those LPs were already written and conceived before the band started recording professionally. So the main differences between those three records are minimal.

While maybe not as monolithic as their debut LP, this second album is still essential Ramones. All 14 songs are originals, except for "California Sun", a cataclysmic (that solo !) reading of the classic Joe Jones / Rivieras track.

It's delightful to discover other references to classic artists - "Suzy Is A Headbanger" points directly at Eddie Cochran, and "What's Your Game" and "You're Gonna Kill That Girl" owe a debt to The Beatles.

The strongest track has to be "Pinhead", which closes side one. If there's ever been a freak anthem, this is the one :

Gabba gabba we accept you we accept you one of us
Gabba gabba we accept you we accept you one of us

I don't wanna be a pinhead no more, I just met a nurse that I could go for
I don't wanna be a pinhead no more, I just met a nurse that I could go for

I don't wanna be a pinhead no more, I just met a nurse that I could go for
I don't wanna be a pinhead no more, I just met a nurse that I could go for

D-U-M-B
Everyone's accusing me
D-U-M-B
Everyone's accusing me

I don't wanna be a pinhead no more, I just met a nurse that I could go for
I don't wanna be a pinhead no more, I just met a nurse that I could go for

Gabba Gabba Hey!

I've only heard their first album, but I really like it. It's over in a flash but it does the right job.

If you liked the first album, you should try the others too. The first three albums, as I said, are very much alike between them. "End Of The Century", the 1980 LP Phil Spector produced for them, is a very controversial record among fans of punk rock music, but it's a great record, in my opinion, although I'm also a Spector fan, so I'm hardly impartial.

They were a great band, one of the greatest ever. I'm sorry I never got to see them live, but I'm proud to have in my collection one of their later albums, "Mondo Bizarro" (1992), signed by all four members. I really treasure it. It was a gift from my brother.

I will take a listen to their second album when I can. I will also let you know how I get on with it.

I love the way everyone is into this song, so funky. As Carlos Santana said, you can tell when musos are really into their music, as they all pull funny faces - it is soooo true. (I do, too, as I listen - ha!).

Really hooked on surf music lately. It's always been one of my passions, and these last months I have unearthed lots of stuff I had at home, and purchased tons of cool CDs, some of them quite rare and hard to find. Fittingly, summer is getting near, so surf fever is here to stay.

Just a small example - The Chevells were a five-piece band from Orange County, California whose entire recorded output was one self-released single (the only ever release on their Chevell label) in 1963. Incredibly, the single sold 50,000 copies, but the band never had another release, and just sank back into obscurity.

Here's both sides of their only record :
