The 'organised' displays were fine, but a guest brought along a 'Roman-Candle-type' firework & it fell over spraying everybody willy-nilly !

No serious injuries, although one old codger needed help:

Hope someone had a serious word with the guest, and glad the old codger was OK.

Nobody was asked to bring fireworks, but one guest did - with alarming results !

The old codger survived intact...

That's what I meant by "Hope someone had a serious word with the guest".

Glad you're.....err, the old codger is all right.

As part of a crazy private New Year's Eve tradition, I always watch an epic film I haven't seen before at the turn of the year. In 2022/23 the choice fell on "War and Peace" - the seven-hour version of the Russian feature film from 1966/7 (it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1969). Luckily the film was divided into four parts - I wouldn't have managed to watch it all in one go: Even if it is still extremely remarkable - the battle scenes are phenomenal and Ludmila Savelyeva is downright adorably as Natasha Rostova - it also have its longueurs... But anyway, today I was just searching for the "war of 1812", meaning Napoleon's invasion of Russia. To my surprise I stumbled upon the American-British war of the same year, which seems to be rather forgotten here in Europe, and alongside I found this absurd photo from 1966:

Image
"Procrastinators Club of Philadelphia pickets protest the United States involvement in the War of 1812. March at City Hall was a spoof of the current rash of protests."

It reminds me of one of my favorite sayings: "Better late than never!" Whereby that applies to many things, such as watching an old classic film for the first time or expanding (resp. refreshing) historical knowledge ;)

To avoid any confusion, this photo somehow ended up on my timeline on Facebook and I immediately noticed it was taken in Paris.
I do not know the lady, nor have I ever been at that restaurant.
But I know you guys all like Paris.

As it happens, one of my granddaughters is there for Paris Fashion Week:

You might bump into the woman in Yin & Yang's post, but Natalie is back in the UK now...

If I bump into that woman, and she's wearing the same outfit, it'll be like looking up an old friend.

As for Gary Lineker getting in hot water with the BBC for anti government comments, here's where I stand on it:

The BBC can expect & demand that their employees/contractors show political impartially when broadcasting.

The BBC doesn't, & shouldn't, have control over what they say [or write] when not 'on air' !

Go for it, Gary !
