Yes, any individual is open to being slandered, but Charles was intimating that human nature itself was so bad that it couldn't be shown to be a worse light than it is.

I disagreed with him on that point.

You can guess by how others treat you.
Like when you order a cup of coffee at the restaurant of a warehouse like Harrods and the woman behind the counter keeps on talking with her collegues and gives you a cappucino instead of coffee, you are not liked.
Or in a store it is your turn and you get ignored,
That sort of things.
On the othger hand, if they like you, you get extra's like a larger sandwich or ask you what you want before it's your turn.

I've found that some people take an instant dislike/like of me according to their want.

It's the same 'me' so the difference must lie with their varying perceptions.

I just carry on regardless...

b) have you ever liked someone and then grown to dislike them?
