This is an amazing photo. Where was this clipping originally published ?

I'm not a big Johnny Carroll fan, but his "Hot Rock" from 1956 is an all-time classic. Truly tremendous track. And I like a couple of his Sun tracks too. He recorded six tracks for Decca in 1956 on March 25 and 26. According to the information we have, Bob Moore is seen playing bass just behind Carroll, and in front we have Grady Martin with his back to the camera. At right there's a guy I can't identify (maybe an engineer or something) and at the piano it has to be Owen Bradley.

Here's "Hot Rock". Listen to that Grady Martin guitar, and the interplay with the bass and drums. Just fabulous stuff. This same formula was later applied to the Johnny Burnette Trio and other rockabillies recording in Nashville :

Sorry, MM, have no idea where it was published. Chris Giles sent to me in a message a long time ago with no details, he didn't know either when i asked him.

I like "some" of Johnny's recordings. I have his Bear Family CD but there's a lot of mediocre tracks on there. I like his Sun offerings, too. Never liked his "Corrine Corrina".

Janis Martin was already mentioned in this thread. Here's an autographed picture including her band "The Marteens" that is currently offered on eBay. I hadn't specifically looked for it, it popped up because of the Elvis connection. But I found it interesting. In a hurry, I only found one other slightly alternate shot from this photo session. I got the name of the "Guess Who" band member from a Finnish website (https://www.bluesnews.fi/rockabillyelaa.htm). From left to right: Bobby Garner (electric guitar), June Jenkins (bass), Janis Martin (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Troy Cable (drums).

Great photos, HC. Thanks.

Janis Martin's recordings for RCA Victor between 1956 and 1958 were of such high quality. To me, she was the best rockabilly gal ever.

OK, maybe not great photos, but three real 'kool' performers from the early days of rock 'n' roll...

Well, might as well mention Wee Willie Harris, who's just died at the age of 90. Maybe not much known outside the U.K., but he played with some of the up and coming pop stars in the 50s, such as Tommy Steele, Screaming Lord Such and Adam Faith. He was only 5'2", hence his nickname.

I also like her very much! I don't own many vinyl records, but my little collection includes "Janis and Elvis" (130 253, re-issue, 1985) .

But what about this gal?

I have that French reissue of the classic South-African record too. It has a special sound, right ? I like that one.

As for Wanda Jackson, she is number two in my book of rockabilly gals. Number three is Barbara Pittman, maybe.

Janis Martin's version of Buck Griffin's "Let's Elope Baby", taped at RCA's McGavock studio in Nashville at her first-ever recording session (March 1956), when she was still 15, with backing by Grady Martin, Chet Atkins, Bob Moore, Floyd Cramer and Buddy Harman, has to be one of the greatest rockabilly tracks ever, by anybody.

Dig Grady Martin's funky guitar solo !
