The Fleetwoods have always been a guilty pleasure of mine.

This b-side from the summer of 1962 was written by Randy Newman :

That was nice and gentle. That don't write them like that anymore. OK, so I'm going to add this one which was always a favourite.
When I get tired and feeling blue-a.

I'll swim or fish or go for a drive-a

Every girl and every guy-a

So if you're a little like me-a

Take it Billy, even with the weird phrasing.

This has also been a favourite record of mine ever since I heard it.

Recorded late 1963 by Jan & Dean, with the collaboration of Brian Wilson and others, and under a strong Spector influence, this is the kind of record no British band could ever have dreamed of conceiving, let alone recording.

There are several variants of this recording, but this is the original powerful mono single version that blasted from radios all over the USA those last weeks of 1963, and first weeks of 1964. The single was a Top Ten hit.

A couple of trivia facts - the single was released 12 days after President Kennedy was murdered. Two years later, Jan Berry was involved in a car accident that almost took his life. He was driving a Jaguar XKE like the one mentioned in the lyrics of the song :

Still fourteen hours away from summer, but let's celebrate anyway.

The coolest season of the year. This will be the first normal summer since 2019, so that makes it even cooler, and I will try to dig it the most.

I recently stumbled upon the sole record release of The Pals, a NY vocal group. This was originally released in the summer of 1958, A forgotten gem.

Play it loud !

That reminds me.

We had our village carnival here last weekend and there was a fair, with dodgem cars. Back in the good old days you'd get in the dodgems, some member of the great unwashed would hop between cars to get your money, and the music was great, rock 'n' roll, doo-wop.....

Now you have to pay at the booth (£10 per car), then you get in the car and have to strap yourself in round the shoulders, then someone checks that you have strapped yourself in, then off you go for about 5 minutes, and there's no music.

Miserable experience.

Ha ha. I haven't been to the dodgem cars since the early 80s. Back then, here where I live, you went to the booth and paid x amount of money for x amount of plastic coins. The more you purchased, the price was relatively cheaper. Then you had to wait until the cars stopped, all at the same time, and you got into one. You put the plastic coin inside a hole in the car, and off you went. The music was typical of the time, disco music mostly. Sometimes the odd cool rock and roll track slipped in, though. I remember being there with Robert Gordon's version of "The Way I Walk" blasting out of the speakers, which was quite incredible.

That's what I thought too, then last Saturday this bloody virus managed to infect one of us, first time in over 2.5 years since it broke out. Don't worry, the one who got it is ok, but now there is a kinda internal lockdown in our house and it all starts over again (masks, tests before work...) But I don't want to spoil the mood: Here's a song that will always herald the summer for me and, yes, also cheers me up again this time:

Mungo Jerry.....that was the first band I ever saw, back in 1970. Nearly every song they sang was the same beat. It was great.

Hope you all will be OK.

Yup, "You got women, you got women on your mind, have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find".
Or
"If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal, If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel, Speed along the lane, do a ton or a ton and 25
When the sun goes down, you can make it, make it good in a lay-by"

How long before some do-gooder wants it banned?

It's a great feel good track, no. 5 in my summer playlist on my iPod.

Here' the top 10 of 68 tracks.

That "daddy's rich" line surely has to be a wink to the Gershwins "Summertime", right ? Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Anyway, The Lovin' Spoonful are well-placed at the top of that list. That song is a killer !

Thanks for your Top 10, I'm listening to some of this songs right now! I wonder what's Number 68? Anyway, I hope this list or summer doesn't have to end with a "Summertime Blues" ;)

It's been very mild progress so far, not quite over, but the rest of us haven't caught it yet. So, fingers crossed ;)

Since it was so hot here today and the heat hit me on my way home, I had to think of this song:

68 is this one, although I might promote it to no.11.

210 minutes from now, summer will finally arrive.

Cool weather, cool chicks, cool drinks and cool music. What else can one ask for ?

Here's some 1964 coolness by the great Hondells :
