"Don't tell me to play it. I will when I get ready. Do you understand me?"

It's OK, but sounds like she's reading the words from an autocue which is running slow...

Still doesn't beat Dusty's version. I heard it on the car radio a couple of days ago and I'd forgotten how good it was.

No it doesn't. He was just at that stage where he was beginning to lose the subtlety and was replacing it with power. Really, not always a good thing.

This song has always sounded to me like out of the Eurovision song contest. Not my kind of thing.

I'm used to Elvis' version and it's the only one I can stand - mono (single) mix.

It is a European melody with English lyrics.

That worked very well for the composers then.

It's funny, because those old festivals were more about the songs than about the singers. There were a handful of songs that were performed by several singers. That changed later.

One regular winner was Domenico Modugno. I remember this being played when I was a child.

and also this which coincidentally I'm trying to learn in Italian right now.

He was also the composer of a song called Io. I have heard an English version, but don't Ask Me where.

Over one year after recording "Ask Me", Elvis did his own mini-version of "Io" right before one of the takes of "A Dog's Life". This was first heard back in 1980 thanks to the "Elvis Aron Presley" set (1:12 spot in the following video).

@ Keith Flynn - this could be an interesting addition to the sessionography (where bits and pieces are mentioned) :

No he didn't.

I emailed Keith on this months ago because he was saying exactly that.

The slate for A Dog's Life was EOV and Elvis, as he often did, just sang this after the engineer called the take. E-o da da de-o.

Yes, the slate is EOV, and this reminds Elvis of "Io", which he then sings.
