My next door neighbour made me a madras curry last night. It's something she does quite often.

The one the other side is really stuck up, only ever used to speak to me, or anyone, if we dropped off a parcel we'd taken in for her, and then it was "thank you", and a slam of the door. Her husband is friendly but very religious and it can get quite awkward. When I told him my mum was dying he asked if he could say a prayer for her. I said he could, but I didn't expect him to do it there and then in front of me. "Those are powerful words, she'll be all right" he said. She died two days later.

Sometimes it almost seems like god couldn't care less, doesn't it ?

Equally, surely the very nature of having an open mind is that you're receptive to people trying to put things into it, but by a process of evaluation, you decide whether to accept those things. Having an open mind enables you to learn. It also teaches you that opinions are generally worthless when compared to facts.
