The song was based originally on the tune of another Arthur Crudup composition titled "I don't know it" as recorded on 22-10-45 (RCA 20-2387); he re-wrote the lyrics to the well known That's all right.

Thanks colonel snow. Arthur was so limited in his repertoire. I wonder how many of his songs used the same tune?

It's also very similar to My Baby Left Me.

Thx for the info!

Apparently, some of the lyrics can be traced back to ‘That Black Snake Moan’ by Blind Lemon Jefferson (1926).

From 1.33 – 1.55:

Mama, that’s all right, mama that’s all right for you,
Mama, that’s all right, mama that’s all right for you,
Say baby that’s all right, most any old way you do.

From Graceland Auctions:

The display features a 78 RPM record and a 45 RPM record of Arthur Crudup’s “That’s All Right.” The display contains an engraved metal plaque titled “BIG BOY,” with an informative passage that reads in part: “Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup, known as the grandfather of Rock ‘N’ Roll, was the writer and original singer of Elvis Presley’s first recording, ‘That’s All Right.’” Crudup first recorded it in 1946 in the 78 format, and again in 1949 in the much rarer 45 format stamped in orange vinyl.

Just let me correct a couple of things :

**Crudup recorded the original version of "That's All Right" in 1946 in Chicago. It was first released in 1947 as a 78 rpm record, and again in 1949 as a red vinyl 45 rpm record. Both releases used the 1946 recording. A later studio version, done in New York in 1962, was eventually released as part of an album.

**RCA Victor 47-5167 is indeed a record by Crudup (from 1953, not 1952), but unrelated to "That's All Right". See this link :

colonel snow wrote:Thanks Mr Moon for the addition / correction; I got my information from this record. Besides E2 in the matrixnumber is 1952.
(E0 = 1950 / E1 = 1951 / E 2 = 1952 etc). In 1955 RCA matrix numbers start with F and each year got it's own letter from now on.
In 1963 the systen changed again.
An explanation of matrixnumbers can be found on the site of Keith Flynn as far it concerns Elvis.

Thank you for the info.

I’m no expert but Discogs lists the record you’ve posted above as an unofficial repro from 2010. See 1st link. It’s apparently from RCA Victor (2), which is not the official label. See 2nd link please.

Colonel - you are making my mind boggle ! :)

First of all, that white label you are showing, as Suspicious Minds has remarked, belongs to a bad, fake repro. This record was never issued originally like that.

Second, the matrix numbers were given at the time of recording. Both songs included on RCA Victor single 20 / 47-5167 were recorded in 1952, but not released until 1953, as I stated earlier.

A couple of pages from "The Billboard" that I hope put an end to this chaos :) :

There's also a myth going around (perpetuated by Wikipedia, for example) that the 1949 red vinyl reissue carried the "That's All Right, Mama" wording on the label, which is totally false, as can be seen in the image I posted in the thread linked above.

In fact, all of the early versions of the song, from the Crudup original, through Elvis, Marty Robbins, etc. used the same wording - "That's All Right" - no "Mama", no "Alright", etc.

End of rant. :)
