‘The First Noel’ (aka ‘The First Noël’ or ‘The First Nowell’) is a traditional English Christmas carol, from Cornwall, probably dating back to the early modern times (16th-17th century), though it might even be older.

The oldest print appears in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), edited by William Sandys.

Its hymn arrangement, as it is mostly performed today, was composed by John Stainer and published in Carols, New and Old (1871).
