The original version was recorded in september 1959 by Charlie Blackwell (Warner Bros 5132).

Another version was recorded in november 1959 by Marty Vine (Epic 9382).

‘The Girl Of My Best Friend’ was released as B-side of the single ‘Choppin' Mountains’.

It was reviewed in The Billboard, November 30, 1959:

I read somewhere... (a thought comes to mind, did I read it some time? or hear it? I can't quite recall) that a british DJ at the time had a competition when he played the then new Elvis hit and the Ral Donner cover back to back and asked listeners to guess which was which... the only time Ral Donner actually sounded like Elvis in my opinion
