The original version was recorded in 1947 by Charles Brown & Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers (Exclusive 63X / Exclusive 254) = original
He re-released the song through the years on several labels.

re-release 19?? as Charles Brown (Blues Spectrum 17);
re-release 1962 as Charles Brown (Imperial 5902);
re-release 1963 as Charles Brown (Ace 775);
re-release 1968 as Charles Brown (Kent K 501);
00-08-53 - Johnny Moore & The Three Blazers with vocal Mauri Jones on Hollywood label;
remake – 04-09-56 by Charles Brown & Band (Aladdin 3348).

I had the honour of seeing Charles Brown in concert in 1997, and he did sing "Merry Christmas Baby", as well as "Drifting Blues", his other classic from the late 40s.

Those songs have been covered to death by everybody and his brother, but it was cool to hear them from the man who first recorded them half a century earlier.

Probably one of the best songs Elvis did in the 70s.
