Thank you. I had no idea there were 6 (!) versions in 1953.

Billboard, March 7, 1953, p. 49:

Billboard, April 25, 1953:

Hound Dog is listed as #1 in Top Rhythm & Blues Records (both National Best Sellers and Most Played by Juke Boxes)

I see Willie Mae Thornton's Hound Dog is on the charts along with R Thomas Jr's Bear Cat.

Wasn't there litigation concerning these two songs ?

Indeed.

Here’s an article about it (the litigation issue is discussed from the 3rd paragraph onwards)

That's an interesting article, thanks !

I knew Leiber & Stoller wrote Hound Dog but I never realised they were just teenagers at the time !

colonel snow, may I ask you a question. I've seen you post dates as far as when different artists have recorded certain selections both here and over on FECC. How are you able to determine when some of these were recorded?

Elvis was well aware of "Hound Dog" before he was inspired by Freddie Bell's version when he saw the group perform the the song in Las Vegas 1956 because he had the original Mama Thornton 78 in his collection.

It certainly became "his song" and an absolute game changer and became one of his biggest selling records.
