You are right - "Elvis In Person".

Sorry, I misunderstood your previous post that mentioned ‘another recording’. I misunderstood that as ‘another recorded version’ (of the same song). My apologies.

Thank you very much for your informative follow-up post and the historical context on the release ‘strategy’ of songs on different labels. Impressive example. Much appreciated! Thx!

:o

Lord, have mercy! That's +20 recordings of the same song in 1 year. I notice some 'strategic release duplication' - e.g. Elliott Stewart & Elliott Stewart as Harlow Lashley - as you have explained in another topic in this forum.

There are some 'exotic' artist names too: The Ipana Troubadours, The Coconut Grove Orchestra... :P

Thank you for adding this detailed list!

Are you lonesome tonight----historical version

Postby cadillac-elvis » Fri Jan 11, 2019 6:03 am

Check this very old version of the song by the Carter Family.
Many lyrics differences, but the basic outline is there. '

This son dates back to the 1920's, it was basically a musical piece with a chorus refrain and spoken segment. As usual Elvis missed a verse out (though it works perfectly). Al Jolson had one of the most noticable hits with it,
"We'll bring in The Supremes tomorrow night... Mahalia Jackson singing Lead..."

I recall reading that Elvis recorded this as a favour to The Colonel as his "wife" liked this song. (Elvis occasionally dedicated it to her). I read that it was because she was a fan of Al Jolson, but I could be mistaken... "A thought comes to mind, did I read it sometime? Or hear it, I cant quite recall..."
"We'll bring in The Supremes tomorrow night... Mahalia Jackson singing Lead..."

Interesting that on the IN PERSON album Elvis says "One of the first records I ever recorded was back in,... 1927 I think it was..."
Listen to this 1927 version... other than the intro, you can hear the similarities... this is also the way the song is published on sheet music... seems most likely..
