Interestingly it was originally a 1927 hit for Vaughn De Leath and the backing was provided by Bob Haring and the Colonial Club Orchestra.

She seems to have recorded it the same year without the orchestra

It was also recorded by one Henry Burr in 1927

Then came Blue Barron's 1950 version with the spoken part which seems to be the template for Elvis' version. The vocal was by Bobby Beers but the narration by John McCormick.

Al Jolson also did a version with the narrative

Just a year before Elvis, Jay P Morgan had a hit with the song.

There was also a verion by the Carter family.

colonel snow, the version by the Dixie daisies was the B side to the Black Bottom by Sam Lanin's Dance Orchestra. Here's a slightly better scan of the label.

In searching for more information, I came across this site by David Neale (why do I know that name?) who has done some great research on the song and posted several versions.

For who wants to dig up in old archives you can't find nearly nothing.

Thanks, colonel.

Elvis' 1960 recording of this song is for me one of his really immortal works, a masterpiece.

Here's the full "The Billboard"'s advertisement, as shown on the YT clip you posted :

I've checked it before posting in this section; Are you lonesome tonight posted in july 2016 was a version from the 20's.

I also posted this exact same version. It's not a problem, just saying.
