Apron Strings

Postby Suspicious Minds » Fri Jul 12, 2019 2:23 am

Elvis made an informal recording of ‘Apron Strings’ while in the Army.

Written by George David Weiss & Aaron Schroeder.

First recorded by Billy The Kid (aka David Hill), 12 January 1959. Released on 2 February 1959, on Kapp K-261X, with ‘I Hardly Know Me’ as flipside.

Billy The Kid’s ‘Apron Strings’ wasn’t a success; it just made the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for 2 weeks (peak position #92). It got a minor review in Billboard, 2 Feb 1959:

Other early recordings:

Jay B. Loyd also recorded the number for Hi Records, backed by Bill Black's Combo, but his version wasn’t released for many years.

Cliff Richard recorded it in April 1959, releasing it as the B-side of ‘Living Doll’.

Cliff did a terrific job of it.

she's well acquainted with a touch of the velvet hand, like a lizard on a window pane

All that I'm 'upset' about, if anything, is how the singer in that video clip isn't just out-of-lip-sync - he seems to be performing a different song altogether !

You're right there. Someone has overdubbed the track over a film of Cliff singing something else. The film is obviously from some years after the song. I can't say I looked at it too closely before to notice this, but then again, I'm not a big Cliff fan like you are.

Here it is. I think it's weak in comparison to Cliff's version.
