The original version has one verse that was latter omitted :

By the way, Anita Wood's first record was released by the ABC-Paramount label in the summer of 1958 - an AWFUL version of "Crying In The Chapel". It's an almost unlistenable record. I wonder if Elvis ever told her. I'm sure she had other abilities, but singing wasn't her thing.

I haven't heard all the versions of this song, but it's hard to think of a better precedent than The Orioles' (lead vocal, Sonny Til) record from 1953.

With Beatle mania running wild & after a run of 8 rather weak Elvis singles in the UK, only one of which scraped into the top 10, Crying in the Chapel was a surprise hit in the spring of 1965 !

It took him back to the No.1 slot in the chart, something he hadn't achieved since July 1963 & wouldn't do again until July 1970 !

Something about it seemed to appeal to the UK record buyers of the day.

Maybe it was the sincerity that he brought to his version of this old song.
