colonel snow wrote:The original version was recorded in march 1953 by Darrell Glenn (Valley 105).

It was a popular recording in 1953 and covered many times.

Darrell was the 17 year old son of the author of the song, Artie Glenn. The original was released on the Valley label, late June 1953, and it was a Top Ten hit, both in "The Billboard" and in "The Cash Box".

Darrell would later write "indescribably Blue", also recorded by Elvis.

The original version has one verse that was latter omitted :

Every sinner looks for something that will put his heart at ease,
There is only one true answer, he must get down on his knees.

Here's the 45 label for the original, as well as the sheet music with the complete lyrics :

By the way, Anita Wood's first record was released by the ABC-Paramount label in the summer of 1958 - an AWFUL version of "Crying In The Chapel". It's an almost unlistenable record. I wonder if Elvis ever told her. I'm sure she had other abilities, but singing wasn't her thing.

I haven't heard all the versions of this song, but it's hard to think of a better precedent than The Orioles' (lead vocal, Sonny Til) record from 1953.

With Beatle mania running wild & after a run of 8 rather weak Elvis singles in the UK, only one of which scraped into the top 10, Crying in the Chapel was a surprise hit in the spring of 1965 !

It took him back to the No.1 slot in the chart, something he hadn't achieved since July 1963 & wouldn't do again until July 1970 !

Something about it seemed to appeal to the UK record buyers of the day.

Maybe it was the sincerity that he brought to his version of this old song.
