Millie Kirkham is there on stage with him during the performances, but is not seen in any rehearsal.

How did she know what was expected of her ?

Nobody ?

She was definitely there - for example at the rehearsals on August 4 and 7. On August 4th, she's sitting right behind Myrna Smith, whose big afro hairdo partially covers Millie , and next to one of the Imperials (who looks with his sunglasses an awful lot like my dad at that age and time - I once asked him if he had secretly visited the USA back then to sing with the King, but he regretfully denied it )

Here's another one from the August 4th backup singer rehearsal (Millie Kirkham, The Sweet Inspirations & The Imperials - supervised by Felton Jarvis) to a record version of "Twenty Days and Twenty Nights":

On August 7th she stands behind the Sweet Inspirations and again next to the Imperials, you can only see her to a limited extent, but she was definitely there.

Thanks, HillbillyCat !

Looking again, I can just about see her, hidden as she is behind all that hair !

I will sleep well tonight [as usual]...
