CHAUTAUQUA/THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS SCRIPT

A script of the classic Elvis Presley film The Trouble With Girls (MGM, 1969). The cover of the script bears the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer script department header, the working title “CHAUTAUQUA,” producer/writer credits, and the script date of August 28, 1968, has been crossed out with a black felt tip marker. The Trouble With Girls was adapted from the 1960 novel Chautauqua by Day Keene and Dwight Vincent Babcock. The producers of the film changed the title prior to release, stemming from concerns that film audiences would not understand the title or be able to pronounce it.

The original version was written by Buddy Kaye & Ben Weisman and this version has more verses. Also a lot of lines were changed.
It's unknown at the moment if the longer version was recorded in an earlier take.

The script Chautauqua was shelved for many years. The original screenplay was written in 1959 with Glen Ford in mind for a leading role. Then another screenplay was written in one of the next years. Finally MGM sold the rights in 1964 to Columbia Pictures and a new screenplay Chautaqua was written but nothing happened. In 1967 MGM bought back the rights again with a new screenplay titled Chautaqua and now songs has to be included.

Here's what I found:

In June 1959 it was announced that Don Mankiewicz would write a screenplay of an unpublished story by Mauri Grashin, Day Keene, and Dwight Babcock. As early as December 1960, Glenn Ford was set to star in the film. By February 1961, Elvis was to join as Ford's co-star along with Hope Lange and Arthur O'Connell. By July 1961, Glenn Ford was out and Elvis was in as the star. In August 1964, Elvis was out and Dick Van Dyke was chosen to star (in a new, re-written screenplay). After more screenwriter changes MGM sold its rights to Columbia Pictures. In April 1968 MGM bought back the rights to the film and Elvis was back in as the star. Production finally began in October 1968 and was finished by December 18, 1968. Filming took place at the MGM studios. Among the film's working titles had been 'Big America' (during the Columbia possession) and 'Chautauqa' (including the time of production with Elvis). Ultimately, it was released as 'The Trouble with Girls (And How to Get Into It)'.

Info from Graceland Auctions: An interesting variation on the U.S. one-sheet, this British Quad promoted the 1969 MGM Elvis vehicle The Trouble with Girls for the UK market. While not employing the electric color palette of the American poster, the central Warholian images of Elvis and repeating typography are no less an impressive product of their time. Poster measures approximately 40 by 30 inch (101.6 x 76.2 cm)
