Exceeding All Expectations!: May 9, 1976

Postby SteamrollerBlues » Thu May 28, 2015 4:27 am

Elvis' final show in Lake Tahoe. This was his longest concert, clocking in at around 2 hours, which is mighty impressive considering Elvis' general state in early 1976. It's not a bad show at all, and it's a good listen. Enjoy!

Newspaper article from Tahoe 1976, thanks to elvisconcerts.com:

"On the Scene
by Perry Phillips
Oakland Tribune
Tuesday, March 9, 1976
Sahara Tahoe's summer entertainment season has been given a big boost with Elvis Presley agreeing to return for the first time in over a year. On orders from his doctor, Elvis curtailed his appearances last year and canceled his engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton when hospital rest was prescribed.

The last time I saw Elvis at Sahara Tahoe, his show ran a good two hours. And, he was on stage darn near the whole time. Two shows a night, even over a week's time, has to take its toll when each show runs two hours.

Since Elvis holds the record in the Sahara Tahoe's High Sierra Theatre it is best you be informed that the usual procedure for show reservations won't be in effect this time around. Here's how it's going to work and you had better move fast if you want to see him. All performances will be presold. All seats in the room are priced at $20.00 each. Tomorrow, the Sahara Tahoe will open an Elvis booth in the hotel lobby and tickets may be purchased there. You may also order by mail by sending a money order, a self-addressed No. 10 envelope and 50 cents for handling. Elvis opens April 30 and closes May 9 so indicate your desired date.

I must admit that's quite some departure from the norm. But Elvis is Elvis, folks, and he'll sell every seat in that room for each and every performance.

By the way, Elvis will do one show a night at 10 p.m. excepting Friday and Saturday nights. On these nights, he'll do shows at 8:15 p.m. and midnight. High Sierra Theatre's normal dinner and cocktail show format won't be in effect either. The ticket price will include two beverages and all taxes and gratuities.

I don't know what the procedure is if you should want an extra beverage.

Anyway,

write to: Elvis in Concert; Sahara Tahoe:
P.O. Box C; Stateline, Nev. 89449.

And, good luck.

Elvis did put on some pretty good shows during this engagement.

I'm not a big fan of the jumpsuits he wore during this period, though.

Elvis sure loved doing shows at Del Webbs Sahara hotel it has been said in many US journals in the past . He loved doing the midnight shows than the Dinner shows too - Yes this cd _recording is the longest show he gave with more dialogue and fan paricipation between Elvis and the fans -he kinda was easy and relaxed on this show I feel - He did do shows in May 24th '74 and such _This is from May 9th '76 when he was going through his routine at Vegas etc _Like Vegas he did do rare songs on this show like _Guadalajara (1 Line ) , Oh Danny Boy Sung by Sherill Nielsen , Wooden Heart (1 Line ) , Help Me and such _ there is a reprise too of his current hit at that time called Hurt -
........................................................
this cd will please new fans and hard core fans alike and many new fans will know by listening to this cd -
how great and versatile an entertainer he was-
Long Live The King Amen

I did a google search about this concert and ended up here. I gotta say, this is one of the best concerts he ever gave. I spent the morning listening to it and I think it's time someone gives it a definitive remastering. The version I have is pretty flat sounding. There is a more recent remastered version out there called And Then The Lights Went Down that I haven't heard yet but maybe with advances in audio restoration, it might be even more improved. Anyway, it's a really great show.

Oh and one more thing, do you happen to know how I can find some of elvisalisellers' remastered/restored/reworked audio files? I want to hear some of the things he's worked on. I'm a little late to the party, so to speak

He threw in quite a few gems. But, why does he sound a bit sleepy during singing and interaction with the audience? Was he just exhausted of his engagement?
