More AFRTS 16" discs

Postby Mister Moon » Sat Nov 12, 2022 10:19 pm

I stumbled upon these rare items.

The first one, from 1956, has the same track listing as Elvis' second album, but omits "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again".

The second one, from 1958, is a various artists compilation which includes both sides of one of his singles from that year :

Odd that they should miss one track out.

Especially as it is one of the best on the LP.

I agree, it's strange.

I thought it could have been a label misprint, but the other photos show indeed five tracks on one side and six tracks on the other :

There must have been some copyright issue.

16rpm records were mandatory here in the UK by law until 1969. They were majoratively talking records such as the bible etc, designed for blind people so they didnt have to turn the record over as often. Music on 16rpms is exceptionally rare, i dont think any major releases were ever pressed that way,

Love the 16" records though, I used to have one (none Elvis related) and it wouldnt fit on my standard home turntable so never got to play it,!!!

I remember the Zenith console my family had when growing up with all the speed settings from 16-78! Curiosity got me me bad with that weird 16 rpm speed. I played (as a kid) some 78s at 16 to hear the lower pitch. Some actually sounded pretty good!
