Songs planned for regular studio session

Postby Harty » Tue Oct 01, 2019 7:37 pm

Colonel Snow is my master for the hidden / planned songs / demo songs for the movie song sessions. Also we know a lot about the regular
studio takes like the aborted takes, the count of song takes etc. But I never found any detailed information about the planned songs for the studio sessions. So which songs were regular planned for his studio sessions ? Maybe there are interesting surprises.

Read the book of Ernst: "a life in music".
There you have examples in spades.

With all recording sessions songs come and go until the last minute.

Some information:

Fallen angel It was not recorded by Elvis.
Written in late1955 a version by:
1 – Ben Raleigh & Ben Weisman (Edward B. Marcks Music) – copyrighted 07-11-55;
2 – Stanford & Irving Stanford (Stanford Music) – copyrighted 16-08-55;

I have found several artists which recorded a song with this title between 1954-1957.
I don't know if they all recorded the same song as I have no information about songwriters and composers.

This is the performance and song offered to Elvis -

Fallen Angel - The four fellows - Ben Raleigh/Ben Weisman.

Kevan Budd.

Pleasant, nothing special. Standard and predictable chord progression. I wonder what Elvis would have done with it though?

It was not recorded by Elvis. I found a recording from early 1956 by Terry Fell (RCA 47-6515).

It's terrible. Yeesh!

It was not recorded by Elvis. It was recorded on 13-02-56 by Wade Ray (RCA 47-6544).

Another one that fortunately Elvis passed up on.

It was not recorded by Elvis. I have found recordings in 1956 by Leon Payne and Carl Smith.
Leon Payne recorded the song in september 1955 (Stardust 220).
Carl Smith recorded the song on 28 february 1956 (Columbia 21522).

I reckon Elvis could have done a reasonable job with this, but I'm glad he didn't try it. It's plodding, not helped by the fact that it's in 3/4 waltz time. Too country!

This is interesting. Thank you.

The Four Fellows also recorded the original of "Soldier Boy", in 1955.

There's a song called "Fallen Angel" by Hardrock Gunter, and it was released as Sun single 201, a couple of months before Elvis' debut, May 1954. It's an old-fashioned western swing dittie that could as well have been recorded in 1934 instead of 1954. No wonder Phillips blew his mind when he heard The Memphis Flash in full flight.

I’m honoured you call me a master in the first post of this topic; but don’t forget Kevan Budd. He's the "head"master. He knows a lot more about this subject.

For me there's no need to add more information because it's already in the rejected songs section.

This is off-topic but I can't help posting this.

From my dusty vaults, the autograph Hardrock Gunter signed for me in 1996, during his visit to Europe for a few live appearances. He was 71 - only 17 months younger than Hank Williams, whom he acquainted frequently. Both men were from Alabama, by the way.

Anybody else here has a Hardrock Gunter autograph ? ;)

Very Cool!

I doubt if many people have heard of him on this message board, let alone seek out to see him and get an autograph.

I like the other side too "Gonna Dance All Night".
