The demos are interesting but I'm sure there are more demos available than those included here. I think Do The Vega is a good alternative version to the one Elvis recorded. Jealous Fool is great but belongs solidly in the 50s, lyrically and structurally. There are two versions of The Lady Loves Me. The voice of the female vocalist on the second version grates, in fact has as much appeal as a soggy cigarette.
As far as having the VLV tracks on mono, they're of no interest to me, but I guess there are fans who go for this stuff.
The extended version of What'd I Say is just a repeat of the instrumental break, so nothing to get excited about. It's also in mono, not stereo as noted on Keith's site, or....if it is stereo, it's the narrowest stereo spread I have ever heard. They've panned everything to exactly the same position.
Night Life on the bonus tracks CD is faded whereas on A Legendary Performer vol 5 not only is it not faded, but it has the count in. The sound is better though on The Making Of VLV.
The Memphis Tennessee CD is also completely unnecessary although I'm sure it would have made little difference to the cost of this package by leaving it out.
So back to the book, which is going to take a long time t get through. It really is packed with information.
Thanks for the information, John. Does the book explain anything about the lost 1963 album of Nashville masters?
I haven't even begun to read the book yet. Hopefully I'll have some time to start doing so this weekend.
