Elvis, Kitty Wells, her husband, and son --> at MGM during Spinout

Postby DarylR » Sun Mar 09, 2025 2:20 am

Hello,

I recently came across this photo and the caption while looking into something else. For several years there's been conflicting stories as to when and where this photo along with an alternate were taken of Elvis with country entertainer Kitty Wells, her husband Johnnie Wright (of the duo Johnnie & Jack), and their son Bobby. Some have placed it at RCA Studio B in Nashville during the May 1966 sessions while others have placed it at M-G-M during the filming of either Spinout or Double Trouble. Well, according to the caption the photos were taken at M-G-M during production of Spinout. One of the photos appeared on page 34 in the May 7, 1966 issue of Cash Box magazine. I believe the recent FTD release of The How Great Thou Art Sessions mistakenly dated the photos as being from the May 1966 RCA Studio B recording sessions in Nashville. Clearly, going by the date of the issue of Cash Box, this isn't correct.

Well, clearly it can't be May 28, 1966 if the Cash Box magazine is dated May 7, 1966 and it can't be historic RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. If I were to put a date on the photos, I would likely say that they were taken during the last week of April 1966 or the beginning of May 1966.

I just find it extremely weird that Elvis is dressed almost identical to how he is dressed during the one known photograph of him with the Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham a few weeks later inside RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee.

Could someone please enlighten DJC over on the other forum that he is mistaken once again.

He does it often, i.e., it isn't an isolated incident (of course).

The March 28, 1966 date was attributed to one of the photographs in Joseph A. Tunzi's 1998 book, Photographs & Memories. I'd have to think that this was merely a typo at the time and he meant to say May 28, 1966. I'd also think that the website link above took the date from the book; hence the confusion. Again, it's pretty clear though that the photograph was taken at some point prior to May 28, 1966 as it appeared in the May 7, 1966 issue of Cash Box magazine.

In the photos above, the jacket and pants appear to be different colors (black pants & lighter jacket), in the Nashville photo he's wearing a solid color (grey) suit. It's also definitely not the same shirt (dark vs light buttons). Only the pendant seems to be the same.

And Johnnie Wright was also a "country singer".

Could someone please inform our esteemed researcher over on the other forum that he was incorrect in his assessment that the photos were taken on May 28, 1966 at RCA Victor Recording Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee?

"Esteemed researcher"? You mean the one who's avatar (for decades) on the other board is Elvis as Dr. John Carpenter holding and using an ophthalmoscope incorrectly?? (He has no clue.) I have always found that quite funny, because it so aptly (ironically) sums him (Saulovich) up perfectly (i.e., a poser, pretending to knowledge, yet always missing some key - very important - ingredients).

This is all so typical of him (Saulovich-Crapenter).

SPINOUT_00227277_1359x1095_081320071733.jpeg

here's a still from spinout.
maybe thats the same jacket/pants from the kitty wells photo.
production at mgm for spinout was feb/early april...in '66...maybe before or after that sequence was filmed.

either way...it clearly is not from the how great thou art sessions.

cool photo.
