Tragedy
According to songwriter Gerald Nelson he wrote the song with Fred Burch for Elvis; however it was rejected. It was recorded in october 1958 by Thmas Wayne (Fernwoof 109) and produced by Scotty Moore. Through the years recorded by a lot of other artists.

Thomas Wayne (Perkins) was the younger brother of the legendary guitarist Luther Perkins, who played with Johnny Cash for more than a decade, and who died tragically in 1968 at age 40.

Princess Papoolas papaya

The song was selected for scene 28 in the movie Paradise Hawaiian style (22-06-65) but replaced by Queenie wahine's papaya.

These kind of songs were written for scenes in a movie; the vision of Hal Wallis and other producers was to make musicals on film with a lot of songs.
In their vision Elvis don't need a career as serious actor (the fans want songs in a movie); these movies mean a lot of profit for the producer (and Colonel Parker!). The movies with a few songs only didn't make it.

Little darlin
The song was selected for recording on 30-31 october 1976. As far as we know it wasn't recorded on that session but Felton Jarvis asked Elvis to do live versions in april 1977 for the next album. There was hardly new material for a new album.

by the way,,, great topic with some very interesting info.

I find it easy to understand that Elvis never recorded a studio version.

It was a fun segment of the show, and I am glad he included it in his shows when he did.

it's also worth noting that during his visit with Eddie Fadel in Texas in 1958 they play
the "little darlin" record. I can't recall off hand which version it was, but I think it was the Diamonds version.

The tune is based on the song Petite fleur (written in 1959 by Sidney Bechet)...

"Petite Fleur" is an instrumental written by Sidney Bechet and recorded by him in January 1952.

It wasn't a hit until 1959.
