The original version was recorded on 22 november 1944 by Elton Britt (RCA 20-1864).
Through the years a whole army of (C & W) artists recorded the song.
There are may clips on Youtube.
Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters recorded a superlative version for Atlantic in March 1954, released October that year as their fifth single.
This outstanding recording featured, as always, Clyde's incomparable vocals, but also bassman Bill Pinkney's lead (spoken) spotlight during the bridge - both men had already shared lead vocal honors for the group's classic recording of "White Christmas".
