I believe the first version was cut by The Everly Brothers in 1957 for Cadence. It's not as frantic as the original either. They changed the "56" in the original lyrics into "57" in order to suit the current year :

Do you mean the first cover, not the first version? Surely that was Ray Charles before the Everlys.
