YouTube findings of the week

Postby HillbillyCat » Sat Feb 05, 2022 8:36 am

Rather than starting a new thread for each video, I thought it would be nice to have a place where we can collate the discoveries of the week. Just videos that strike us as remarkable:

The first one comes from the "Remaster Group", who provided us before with 4k AI upscaled videos of Aloha from Hawaii (both shows). And I think - yet not perfect - it's a remarkable improvement of picture quality:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AfX9MEkAcM

The next one is a subject of controversial discussion: The use of deepfake technology. This clip - although it fails in terms of lip-synchronization due to the source material - is a remarkable example for what is possible nowadays. I don't like the "use" of ETAs to create "new" material at all, but I could imagine the future use of this technology to restore and transfer low quality footage of Elvis into hd quality via AI...

Seems that the weekend brings the most interesting clips. Take a look and have a listen:

Some of you might know the YouTuber "ElvisMixer", he - just for the fun of it (and not to make a quick buck as others out there) - mixes mono songs into (artifical) stereo with quite excellent results. Most recent he released two remixed songs from the 68' Comeback Special:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP9Mps5hyZ0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loQF4FPcW4g

If you're searching for an alternate backing track of "Marguerita" from the movie "Fun in Acapulco": here's a version by trumpeter Eyal Uriel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQF4Jcp3EGA

Just as last week, another look on the "deepfake" technology, this time the 50s. ETA Moses Snow stands in for the young Elvis. Here you can see how important it is that the stand-in must also be physically similar to the template. For the perfect illusion (as far as the face is concerned) Moses' ears stick out too far.

Two recently released audience recordings have now also found their way to Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCIcNe897gQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1eGda0cVqQ

This week, you could also found two "leak" videos for the upcoming Baz Luhrman biopic. The one where you could saw a first glimp of Austin Butler as Elvis in his 70s Las Vegas jumpsuit (just a re-production of the Elvis menue card from 1971) was erased quite early on. Butler's appearance wasn't exactly well received (it didn't exactly convince me either)... The other clip included footage from an australian TV station video drone filming the 1950s Beale Street set. You could see the Lansky Brothers sign, lots of nice cars from the period and some extras dressed appropriately (one girl in a petticoat even smiled and waved at the camera). This clip is gone too. I'm sorry I didn't post both clips right away.

Ok, this week is completely overshadowed by the Baz Luhrmann film... hard to find other interesting videos. But for my loyal fans here ( ), I'll give it a try...

Elvis at the olympics! Chinese ice dance Team WANG Shiyue / LIU Xinyu dancing to Elvis music.

(posted 7 days ago / They ended up ranked 12th.)

Nice story from the Co-Pilot of the Lisa Marie, Ron Strauss, about Elvis last trip to Hawaii in 1977

The next two clips are not exactly my cup of tea. But I'm sure there are fans out there for remixes like that too:

But back to Luhrmann's movie once again: Dubbed versions of the trailer are now available as well!

For this (anything but optimal) week just two clips...

Elvis' little co-star from "It happened at the world's fair", Vicky Tiu, now Vicky Cayetano, is running for hawaiian governor! She uses her Elvis' connections to introduce herself and her catch phrase "Less conversation, more action". Good luck to her!

More infos: https://www.civilbeat.org/2022/02/ad-wa ... t-tv-spot/

And finally, there are quite a few people out there I'd really like to say:"Listen to this man! Let his dream come true, right now!"

Found a recent clip from the Spanish TV show "Tu cara me suena" (engl. translation: "Your face is familiar to me"), where Spanish artists try to imitate someone as closely as possible. Rasel - a Spanish R&B singer and rapper - tried to recreate the famous "Jailhouse Rock" scene... After all, he made it to the final and finished 5th.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQbY3xmADzw

I found older clips from this show but these aren't nearly as intricately choreographed. Most of them could surely be called parodies. I'll spare you that here and add only one clip that I think is barely acceptable: Miquel Fernández - Love Me (2018)

Nothing special this week. There's another deepfake clip by Luigi Luppo (E L V I S - "Wearin' That Loved On Look"), but I'm disappointed that he didn't try his skills on the new Baz Luhrman trailer instead of using ETA Pete Storm again (although the fringe suit scenes don't look bad). It's probably due to Austin Butler's facial structure not fitting well enough to try (as shown in this older deepfake clip: [DEEPFAKE] ELVIS BIOPIC)

So... Because today is the 62th anniversary of a very special show, here are two older videos of someone who didn't need a deepfake at all  :

Just another clip for the road:
A new interview clip with Collin Raye, T.G. Sheppard, & Richard Sterban (The Oak Ridge Boys), who are talking about Elvis:

First of all here's a DJ Fontana interview from 1984 I forgot to post last week:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCdJsoDp2Ek

Another deepfake clip appeared today, this time Luigi Luppo uses ETA Ted Torres Martin (never heard about him, but I'm not really interested in ETAs at all...) to show the ability of the deepfake technology:

Another Josh Wildfire Remix, this time it's one of my favorite movie songs: "I Got Lucky". As with many of his remixes, I'm again a bit disappointed at what has been made of a happy uptempo song...

A WJZ-TV Baltimore story about a young Elvis Presley fan (1980s):

And finally, here's one for the even younger kids out there:

Youtuber FABRICA1969 has already uploaded some voice-only / acapella videos. In the last seven days two of my absolute favorite film songs were added: "All I Needed Was The Rain" and "They Remind Me Too Much Of You" (last one only first half voice-only)... needless to say (but I do it anyway) that I'm still (and always will be) blown away by this voice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rpYFcxMT3o

An interview with Elvis army comrade James Ramsey and his wife by the "Spa Guy":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJmPxvZipxk

Two remixes caught my eye and ear this week:
First one is another Josh Wildfire Remix. This time: "It's a Long Lonely Highway".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onxctcNzscY

The other one is an older official remix by Danny B. Harvey who was asked by BMG in Japan to make a dance remix of "That's Alright Mama" following the success of Junkie XL's ALLC remix.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peTfPVKpkBQ

Anyone interested in 8mm footage will certainly find the "Elvis Presley Clips" YouTube channel interesting, which has been quite active this week - I dare not say what is really new about it, since film material is not really my specialty.

YouTube channel "Elvis Fan Mafia" uploaded some older documentaries this week, which will certainly be of interest to those who haven't seen them yet: "Cut Me & I Bleed", "Elvis Presley's Home, Graceland" and "Elvis By The Presleys" (part 1)

Finally, an interesting live cover of "First In Line" by the Irish rock band "Just Mustard" (they're from Dundalk in County Louth, Ireland). It's a very different take on this song, very atmospheric:

And I thought I wouldn't be able to find anything interesting for this week:

Today someone uploaded The Bobolinks (or Bob-o-links) song "I Just Want To Be Elvis Presley's Sergeant". Never heard that song before.

Here's an even better sounding clip from almost exactly one year ago:

And this was released as early as March 1957. I wish there was a complete collection of all those early tribute records. There's a whole lot of them.

By the way, did Sid Tepper and Roy Bennett own a copy of this single ?

For this week, I could only find two notable subjects:

There's a kind of feud going on between Elvis' cousin Billy Smith and Elvis' fan and researcher "SpaGuy"... I'm not taking any side here, so just my two cents about such "who is right / who is wrong" discussions in general: No one should dare to think he or she have sole interpretational sovereignty over everything concerning any possible subject. Check your facts (especially if they are not from first hand sources!), consider all eventualities, be open minded, leave room for other opinions, admit your mistakes. And above all: Stay humble! A special line comes to mind: "Isn't it a pity that in this big city not a one a'little bitty man'll admit he could have been a little bit wrong?" ;)

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdBKL9D9iX4

Otherwise, only the Luhrmann film seems to stand out this week: Yesterday, a first film clip was released, concerning Elvis' first Hayride appearance (or what Luhrmann makes of it, in any case it is of course not historically accurate), which was already seen in the trailer. First "leaked" by Elvis' ex-wife, it was officially released shortly thereafter. As far as I remember this is where Austin Butler is heard singing as Elvis for the first time (albeit briefly):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVPXHMc3Q18

Meanwhile, Luigi Luppo finally tried out his deepfake skills on the "Elvis" trailer. At least partially. The result is better than his first attempts with Butler. However, it shows once again that one also need the physique to be able to represent the person whose face was added via deepfake. Either way, it's impressive and one really wonders how long it will be before the big film studios really start using this technique consistently.

Here's a recent phone interview with Barbara Hearn, Elvis' girlfriend in the pivotal year of 1956:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvdcRq0hC6c

It's early morning where I live (and a beautiful one, too). Pure coincidence that I noticed the video of a new song by the English band "Florence + the Machine" today: "Morning Elvis" can be found on their album "Dance Fever", which was released yesterday.

Ok, let's ignore the pink glittery rhinestone-encrusted elephant in the room... and take a look at this week's other picks:

The official Elvis YouTube page (vevo) is particularly active at the moment, they released 4 official audio tracks today ("Cotton Candy Land", "I'm Coming Home", "Baby. Let's Play House" and "Tutti Frutti") and earlier this week a warm welcome to all (new) users:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVY5GJpUsUc

Oh, and this one as well, if someone dare to forget about the real thing these days ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh-fto6e8yM

Also another Josh Wildfire remix appeared this week, and to my surprise this time it kinda works for me ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrEGtvp6h58

Finally: Part II of the Joe "Bitsy" Savery interview (Episode # 136 of Globetrotting with Trey):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaRv6QqMk1Y

P.S.: A new deepfake clip by Luigi Luppo appeared today: ETA Moses Snow stands in for Elvis who sings "Such A Night". But as already written above about another clip of Moses Snow: It just doesn't fit well...

Finally found some motivation to search YouTube for this week, ok to say the truth: it's Sunday morn and I'm very bored...

The official Elvis YouTube page (vevo) is still quite busy, they released 6 official audio tracks ("Edge Of Reality", "I Got A Feelin' in my Body", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child / Where Could I Go But To The Lord #1", "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears", "Polk Salad Annie" and "Power Of My Love"), another 68 clip (this time it's "Love Me Tender") and the story behind "Suspicious Minds":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsXIuMbHa6w

Want to see "Treat Me Nice" from the movie Jailhouse Rock in 8k? Take a look at this new re-scan-clip from FABRICA1969:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqDs4QlZrvY

Josh Wildfire is still mixing his way through the Elvis catalogue. This time it's "Just Because" and just like last weeks entry it's quite enjoyable:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcPQDBtFdlk

And here's something making the rounds in some reaction videos this week: Bass singer Geoff Castellucci tried his deep voice on "Way Down":
