Reconsider Baby - The Live Comparison Series - Volume Eleven

Postby Leon410 » Sat May 22, 2021 12:34 pm

Most fans and music critics are almost unanimous in the view that Elvis was a wonderful blues singer and it was a travesty that he never recorded a concept album in that genre. One of the greatest recordings that Elvis ever made was a blues song, his 1960 recording of "Reconsider Baby" and a track which he occasionally performed on stage during the seventies.

Elvis recorded the studio master of 'Reconsider Baby' in RCA's Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee on 5 April 1960 and it was released on the album 'Elvis is Back' the same year.
On return to live performances in 1969 it was included in the setlist for his first Las Vegas engagement but only used sparingly in the coming years.

Version One : 25 March 1961, Bloch Arena, Honolulu
This was not the first time that Elvis had sang 'Reconsider Baby' live as he had included it in his set list for his two shows in Memphis' Ellis Auditorium in 25 February 1961. However, no recording of this show has yet surfaced and the first recorded version is this from four weeks later during his Pearl Harbor benefit show. This show has had an official release through FTD on the CD/Book release 'Rock around the Bloch'.

Version Two : 23 August 1969, Midnight Show - Las Vegas
The only known performance from August 1969, recorded on 23 August 1969 and this was issued along with the complete concert on the FTD album 'Elvis at the International'.

Version Three : 10 June 1972, Afternoon Show, Madison Square Garden Arena, New York City

Version Four : 12 June 1972, Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum
A wonderful rendition with an Elvis obviously more relaxed than he had been the previous few days in New York.

Version Five : 11 December 1976, Midnight Show Las Vegas Hilton

Version Six : 30 December 1976, The Omni, Atlanta

Version Seven : 31 December 1976 , Pittsburgh Civic Center Arena

Version Eight : The Final Live Version - 21 February 1977, The Charlotte Coliseum

Elvis would sing an excerpt of the song in Amarillo, Texas on 24 March 1977, but this would consist of no more than Elvis introducing the song and a few guitar licks!

As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!

Version 8 has a bit more than you describe. He sings it almost completely.
Anyhow , only the 1960 master and the live 61 version are exciting.
Even the 72 version to this ears is a bore.
His guitar playing on the 76 version is too ragged and not even remotely comparable to his suitable playing in 1960.
