Suspicious Minds at American Sound Studio, final movie & King of Las Vegas

Postby WalterHaleJnr » Thu Aug 20, 2020 11:27 am

Elvis Presley 1969 - Suspicious Minds at American Sound Studio, final movie & he conquers Las Vegas. This is the next installment of my potted history of Elvis' life and career. The actual video/live content is compiled from areas in and around Memphis we have been lucky enough to visit in 2017 and 2019. Following his triumphant NBC TV Special (later to become know as the 'Comeback Special') which was shown at the end of 1968, Elvis began the year with renewed enthusiasm and was keen to record non-movie tracks. So it was either George Klein or Marty Lacker (or both) who persuaded Elvis to try Chips Moman's American Sound Studios in North Memphis which had recently produced hit records by the likes of Neil Diamond and Dusty Springfield. The sessions were an absolute success and produced the big hit singles In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds (his first US No.1 since 1962), Don't Cry Daddy and Kentucky Rain. Also produced the critically-acclaimed From Elvis In Memphis LP, along with the 2nd disc of the double-album From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis. After this Elvis headed to Hollywood for his final acting film Change Of Habit (which had been part of his TV Special deal). Finally free of Hollywood Elvis started preparations for his Las Vegas season which began on 31st July. Elvis brought together a fantastic band to back him up including James Burton, John Wilkinson, Larry Muhoberac, Ronnie Tutt, the Sweet Inspirations and the Imperials. Following this season (another triumph) Elvis was 'off' for the rest of the year other than 1 day of vocal repairs in Nashville. The 70s looked so promising.....

Sources of information have been gathered since I was 12 years old!! Some (but not all) sources include books by Peter Guralnick, Ernst Jorgensen, Pal Grunlund, David English, Erik Lorentzen, Alan Hanson, Paul Richardson and Keith Flynn. Websites include elvisinfonet.com, elvis.com/au, historic-memphis.com, and the fascinating stories and information contributed by so many to the sites, and magazines 'Elvis The Man and His Music' and 'Essential Elvis'. Also the Memphis locations books 'Elvis - Memphis Style' by Mike Freeman and 'Follow Me To Memphis' by Andrew Hearn.
So many more over the years on TV documentaries (although many need better researchers), and VHS (!!), and DVD releases.
