Mid-december 1968 I received a reel-to-reel tape recording of the TV-show's sound, recorded by a friend in Chicago. Complete with intro "The following programm is presented in living colour by NBC" and including the commercial for the Singer LP.
It was great to hear the old songs re-worked and the new songs.
A couple of weeks later someone had received several silent 8-mm 3-minute reels of film, filmed from TV.
We then tried to play the films and the reel-to-reel tape so it would be like it was filmed with sound. To no avail.
In January 1969 there was an Elvis Convention in Amersfoort, The Netherlands.
In the movie theatre one of Elvis' movies was shown and these 8-mm films plus (a copy of) my reel-to-reel tape, which was stopped every time a new film reel was put on.
In those days this was fantastic. Remember, there was no video for consumers and the LP was not yet released here.
Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind.

I still have the reel-to-reel tape recording but no equipment to play it. I also have a reel-to-reel tape of Aloha from Hawaii, taped in the TV studio, which has the best sound I ever heard, but no equipment to play it these days. Buying a fully revised working reel-to-reel recorder will set me back some € 1500,00 or I can gamble and buy a used one for anything between € 100,00 and € 350,00. I have 3 defective ones in the attic!
The 8mm films were of a then friend of mine. We lost touch. It's 46 years ago.

At least a year after the US broadcast.
Had lots of correspondence with broadcasting companies and they explained they could not broadcast it because it was video, not film.
Bits of film and bits of videotape was enclosed in one of the letters to show the difference!
Finally we got a 25 minute version.

Just tracked down what it was in the UK.
We got the full version - 50 mins (no ad breaks for us), in colour on BBC2 20:45 on December 31st 1969.
It wasn't called Singer presents Elvis (no advertsing allowed) and it wasn't called "Elvis" as it was deemed too minimal, so the BBC decided to call it "The Fabulous Elvis".
"The first time ever
Elvis Presley in his own television special
A virtuoso performance crossing the entire
musical spectrum from rock to ballad, with
some of the distinctive Presley hits of the
past and new songs specially written for the
programme.
Produced and directed for NBC by STEVE BINDER "

I have several old VHS videos of this and there are many versions. The first commercial one released by VIRGIN is 76 minutes long, however many bootleg versions have several differences. This has the full Lonesome Tonight amongst others.
