Simple House Rules - The Use Of Photos On Phoenix

Postby John » Mon May 06, 2019 3:15 pm

The rules relating to the posting of photos and other media on the internet are tricky. While photos, scans of historical documents and from magazines and newspapers on Phoenix do not belong to us, or may not even belong to the poster, please appreciate that they are often part of a post that someone has worked on long and hard.

There are some occasions where a member has bought and paid for a photograph or document and has been kind enough to share it on Phoenix.

It’s frustrating to then see some members regularly copying and posting these images elsewhere, claiming the spotlight and without crediting the source. Unfortunately, this practice may discourage members from posting their articles and photos here.

By the same token, members posting photos and other media here, should credit the source, if possible.

While we cannot prevent anyone from copying a photo or content from this forum, and posting it on another site, we ask that: a) you do not constantly do so and b) where you occasionally do this, that you credit Phoenix as your source. This may also encourage other people to join this forum.

If you continue to regularly post content from Phoenix without due credit, we will have no other option but to impose a ban.

Thank you.

Aye! It’s just a matter of courtesy and respect for the often hard work people put in their research. Thanks.
Don't take yourself too seriously ;-)

On the other hand, you could be giving 'credit' to a source who simply stole the photo from another source anyway...

It's very rare that anyone will have the original of any photo, although some people have occasionally bought them.

I know we all take pictures from elsewhere, but most of us don't systematically and regularly take them and almost immediately post them without giving credit. Do you do that?

Take it from me, the hard working members here who compile very interesting posts which could have taken 30-40 hours to put together, or those that provide us with rare and/or good quality photos or information, could stop sharing and posting if they find part of their work being regularly "stolen" by someone who is then claiming the credit and the kudos for them on a FB page or on another forum. I don't want that to happen. Do you?
