Elvis - The Legend (1983) First Elvis CD's

Postby OnStage55 » Thu Dec 06, 2018 4:43 pm

Likely you all know of this 35-year-old 1983 German made 60 Track 3xCD Box set, the very first Elvis CDS.
I remember seeing this set at the Music Shop back then but passed on it because I did not have a CD player.
Every time I see this for sale it's either the asking price is too much or the Bids get too high, so I pass.

Last week I saw this copy on eBay at a starting Bid of $49.00, so I clicked on that before I left for work that day thinking it
was worth a shot at that price. Well, to my surprise, when I got home from work I found out I was the only bidder.

When I received my copy a few days ago I was surprised at the mint condition of the CDs and Jewel cases, its as if they were never touched.
The sound to me is excellent, and altho the box is worn, it's still solid. All in all, a great piece of history to have in my collection.

Does anyone else on here have this in your collection, what are your thoughts about it?

Short discussion ( 2013 ) http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/t ... 83.326802/

I found this quote below from the link above to be of interest.

I have this set and can add that the tapes used were the EQ'd and compressed singles masters which were mostly copies from the original session tapes some of them sound very different to the tracks that are currently available which sound very clean, what you do hear on 'Legend' is the sound of those original 45's treated for radio play. One song 'Big Hunk Of Love' is a revelation as it has extra reverb added and the sound is far more exciting than any version you will hear on a modern CD, it's true to say that the first 'Legend' box set is not as clean but it has an excitement because you are hearing the real original singles masters prepared for radio play in the 50's and 60's, but with the latest CD's they went back to the original session tapes without treatment.

I too didn't buy it because I didn't have a CD player. Never did see it for sale again.

That's a very nice item. Thanks for posting.

I had always assumed that those very early CDs did feature the reprocessed stereo recordings.

That's the case of the earliest Elvis CD release in my collection - "Elvis' Gold Records - Volume 2" from Germany, 1984 edition (PD 89429) - the first time it was released on CD. It featured four bonus tracks, and the order of the original ten songs was altered :

I have this at my dad's. I was given it by my dad's workmate when I was about 12 and don't think I played it more than a couple of times

In 1984 I had no CD player; besides it was an expensive box at the time. When I bought a CD player around three years later on in 1986/1987 there was no need to buy this set. The first US CD's (made in Japan!!) were available.

My first cd was Elvis' Golden Records Vol 3. I didn't have a player when I bought it. I bought it and wondered if cd's would even catch on. I had it for a year before I could listen to it. Took me that long before I decided to buy a player.

Early 1988 the first bootleg CD was released titled In my way - Document records. Meanwhile I've sold my copy. It was the first of countless bootleg CD's.

I have a FLAC copy of the GOLD box but the sound is nothing to light the world up.

I mind reading that the 2nd set - SILVER,was worth more money than the gold set (UK RECORD COLLECTOR?).
Keep the FAITH MIKE :!: :!:

I got the silver set off eBay for a reasonable price. No certificate though.
Did you know? The exact same track listing and masterings can be found on the early CD's 'Elvis The Collection' series volumes 1 to 4.
You did?
Oh well, I tried...
It's far from being all over...

OnStage55, your reference to The Music Shop reminds me of a chain of stores around Canberra, ACT (Australia): are you referring to the same chain?

No, Jim, Music Shop or Record Shop is what I call all Music stores even if they go by another name.
Unless of course if I am directing someone to a certain individual shop or store location then I will use a specific name.
