Not happy with that sentiment.

It's asking you to not try to alter things.

If Lincoln had been content to 'rejoice in the way things are', he'd never have freed the slaves.

If King did the same, human rights wouldn't be recognised the way they are today.

It's those who see wrong & try to right it who shape our world into something better.

What's the point if 'the whole world belongs to you', if it's corrupt & tainted ?

Think again, Lao Tzu !

The saying is not to what you are thinking, Colin. :D

It is esoteric, i.e. Law of Attraction, along those lines.

Lao Tzu was a Chinese philosopher.

I would word it thus:

Yes; however, what he wants one to do is to think that they are already in that place so that they bring what they want to themselves through their thought process, so they are already in that place in their mind, so to speak, not striving to be there.

The idea is, if you are happy and content where you are in your life and believe so (quietly and privately of course), you bring good things to yourself as you are content, you are grateful, and appreciate all around you, so that good things are attracted towards you.

Buddhism type of outlook, however this is Chinese philosophy.

Quote of the Day - 18th October:

I'm in no rush.
One day I'll find a nice guy.

Thanks for the explanation.

So, Lincoln & King could have brought about the changes they did merely by thinking about them,
rather than actively working hard to bring them about ?

Surely not.

Ha!

LOL

:D

No, the world doesn't work that way unfortunately, perhaps in a thousand years things might be how we imagine the more advanced cultures to be, or how they were portrayed in "Star Trek", lol.;)

King did do a good job, though, didn't he, for what he had to deal with?

Same as Mandela, after he was released from jail?

Mother Teresa?

They still tried to non violently move our culture forward.

Of course what they did is different to philosophy.

Agreed, except for Mother Teresa !

Christopher Hitchens sussed her out pretty thoroughly...

I did a one-day course on Chinese Philosophy where we learnt about Lao Tzu. The problem with translations are that they don’t always work perfectly, so people can misunderstand what was originally intended. However, I will check up on my notes about Taoism so see if I can get more clarification on Lao Tzu (it’s not the same perspective or emphasis as found in say, Buddhism or even Confucianism.).

But here is the quote in full which gives context to that extract (from an S Mitchell translation):

Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success of failure: which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never truly be fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.

At first sight, it speaks of the possible fulfilment from the inner life that a seeker cannot find to the same degree in the outer. Usually, wisdom is expressed as pithily as possible, but perhaps for impact, the speaker (or translator), in this instance, provides a narration or poem structure to make the point.

No !

I love the way he took on the 'believers' & totally destroyed their argument with logic, facts, intelligence & common sense !

I have never seen anyone get the better of him in a discussion.

And he was just a journalist, not a scientist !

Unfortunately, he died in 2011...

Is there something that is easy enough for you to find, Colin?

I know nothing on this subject.

I just read something on Mr Hitchens before, and only going on what I read, what he said about Mother Teresa was all heresay and he appeared bitter.

I do like to read both sides of things (if not too much trouble). :D

There are lots of clips of Christopher Hitchens on YouTube !

Don't confuse him with his brother Peter Hitchens, who is not in the same league.

As an appetiser, here he is on an Australian TV show:

Thanks, Colin, I'll listen more tomorrow, I've had a big day today and am tired.

One thing that the panel have in common, thus far after five minutes, is that they aren't happy, they are very negative.

Anyway - tomorrow!
