Sad news indeed. A few years ago I got to spend a few minutes with him. I saw him sitting on a bench by himself one morning in front of a hotel in the Smoky Mountains. I walked up and said hello. He was extremely personable. I shook his hand and told him how much that great music meant to me. We chatted for about 15 minutes or so. He seemed like a really great guy. I was thrilled to meet him like that.

Very sad news. May he rest in peace.

I never got to meet him, but a friend of mine, who was a collaborator for a rock and roll fanzine got to interview him about 25 years ago at some fan club meeting in the UK and he told me he was a great guy. I still have a photo of the two of them somewhere.

Thanks for everything, Dominic Joseph.

I may as well add this here, a happy memory.

When D.J.Fontana visited a UK fan club holiday we got to talk with him on many days, then one evening he came to sit with us at our table.
What he didn't know is that myself and the Mrs had forseen this possibly happening and had set him up earlier throughout the week.
A few days earlier we had bought something in advance and had started joking with D.J. that he was an imposter and not the real D.J. In all honesty I'm sure he thought we (well myself at least) were just crazy, but his curiosity had got the better of him.
After he had been sat with us for a while we sprung the real D.J. on him !!!
It was a dancing monkey that had a shirt saying 'I'm D.J.' on it
I'm sure he was relived to know what it was finally all about, and laughed a while...
He very kindly posed for a shot with 'the real D.J.' and then signed his shirt for us.
Here is the picture of D.J and D.J. and the autographed monkey shirt.

Not too much coverage in the UK media, but his death did rate a mention in the 'i' newspaper today:

RIP.

You helped shape the rock'n'roll drummer.
