Colin, the backing of ALLC was originally released back in 1976 the bootleg album '68 Comeback'. What a great cover shot it was.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySb9ZYzxyEE

No. Ernst is not wrong. I dont give him credit for much, but here he is clearly correct. As col snow states, the backing track intended for use in the show was that from the movie sessions. He has also provides a telegram to prove it.

As I have said many times, just because a story is told many times does not mean it is true. Sometimes facts come along and show us we were wrong - in this case they came in the form of the session reels.

Right, thanks !

My notes are a tad sketchy with regard to the 'unofficial' releases...... something I should work on.

From the info supplied by colonel snow & shanebrown, it seems the vocal-free backing track, unofficially released in 1976, is take 16, & was from the March, 1968, studio sessions for the Live a Little, Love a Little soundtrack & didn't really belong on an album of the 68 Comeback material* !

And, although the song was considered for the TV show, nothing actually got recorded in connection with it.

Additionally, the track used in the Ocean's 11 film, & subsequently re-mixed, very successfully, by Junkie XL was take 2 from the March sessions.

Hope I've got that right now !

*Keith Flynn explains that the 'dub-down' [on which Elvis' vocal is removed] was made at the request of Steve Binder as he was going to have Elvis sing the song in the 'Comeback Show' but never did, so in a sense it could be claimed that it belongs with the other material from the show.

It looks you're still not convinced; you believe Wikipedia (not updated!!) above the three opinions or more opinions from people with knowledge of this subject.
In my files and paperwork the vocal recording of ALLC for the TV special is unknown inspite it's mentioned in the song-rundown on 26 june 1968. During the production of a movie or in this case TV special songs come and go.
Maybe it's cut due to space in the special; I don't know the reason.

hey really good to see this topic is developing and my thanks to all of you for your input. Think we should mix things up and add pics , statistics and quotes here and there, not just Elvis, but other key players like Steve Binder, Bob Finkel plus any one who may have been in the audience. Another thing i am going to drop a line to rolling stone mag and politely remind them that it is the 50th anniversary and if they can do a detailed article either for June or December?

Good on you. What do you reckon about the LP cover. Must go down as the greatest cover shot of all time ! Elvis all fired up as the crowd looks on in total awe.
