Dark Moon

Postby Steve Grayson '67 » Sun Jul 12, 2015 10:47 am

Written by Ned Miller. Bonnie first recorded this song in 1957, using only her Gretch Country Club guitar, a bass player, and Ned Miller, the composer, playing baroque treble figures on his capo'd guitar.

"Dark Moon" is a 1957 country song by Ned Miller. With its haunting rhythm and forlorn lyrics, it scored on both the country and popular charts in the year of its release. Singer Bonnie Guitar took it to the country charts; Gale Storm to the pop charts. Storm's version, with Ned Miller himself on guitar, hit #4 on Billboard, while Guitar's version made #6 on Billboard. Tony Brent's rendition of the song reached #20 in the UK in July of 1957
"Dark Moon" has been covered by numerous artists, past and present, including Elvis Presley.

This should not be here since he was not the first in line (and probably the last), but Chris Isaak did an awesome version of this beautiful song for the movie Perfect World.

I like Chris and have got quite a bit of material by him, but I find this version soulless. It's performed well, but it just doesn't draw the listener in, well, not me anyway. Thanks for posting though, Bob.

Excellent post Steve Grayson '67. :)

I really like Elvis Home recordings, i can just see him relaxing at home singing and playing music that he enjoyed.

It is unfortunate that Elvis did not officially record it. But on the other hand, unlike many songs recorded on bad equipment, this one is available to us in good quality.

Dark Moon is another of the songs that Elvis only recorded informally.

Would have been great if he'd done this 'properly' in a studio setting.
